1. When a free agent receives five or more 5-year “max” offers (first and second bids, maxed), he is eligible for a 7-year contract.
Note: Clubs may opt out from offering 7-year contracts. If all clubs opt out, Free Agent remains with parent club or d20 is rolled to break any deadlock.
2. Third bids will follow first and second bid formula.
3. Roll d20 to break ties unless parent club is involved.
4. Player shall remain on 26-man roster until his 7-year contract expires.
Exception: Player is injured or ineligible.
5. Player shall remain on 50-man roster until his 7-year contract expires.
Exception: Player is ineligible in Year 6 and released; club responsible for 25% of Year 6, 7 salary.
Exception: Club uses Club Option in Year 7 to release player without insurance payout.
6. All 7-year contracts contain no-trade clauses.
Exception: after Year 5.
COMMENTARY: With 11- and 13-year contracts becoming fashionable in MLB, this proposal aims at increasing excitement and club commitment and to prevent clubs from easily maxing out on 5-year offers.
